Rural culture has always had deep roots in this once isolated valley, and even today the mountain landscape of the Schnalstal Valley is home to numerous historic farms across its steep slopes.
Dating back as far as 700 years, some of the farmsteads show distinct signs of having weathered the ages, yet remain standing. Thanks to the custom of the integral farmstead, the sale of the undivided farmland passes to one heir at a time. Thus many of these historic buildings have retained their original appearance.
With their original artefacts and pristine antique interiors, some old Schnalstal Valley farms such as the Finailhof farm resemble museums. There are also guided tours to the Oberniederhof farm, one of the oldest in the valley. After learning something of the storied history of the farm, guests can also visit the working stables.
