The mild climate and terroir make Merano/Meran and its surroundings a wine-producing region. Indigenous wines such as Lagrein and Vernatsch enjoy great prestige. The local red wines of Merano/Meran bear the Italian DOC quality seal.
On-site guided tours and tasting of local wines are offered by wine cellars and at the large Merano Burggräfler Winery, which combines 360 small wine producers within a single cooperative.
Indepent Winegrowers of South Tyrol
Well-known wineries in Merano are Rametz Castle, whose vines traditionally still grow on chestnut wood Pergole and stretch over the vineyards surrounding the castle. Similarly, the Weingut Kränzelhof vineyard estate in Cermes/Tscherms grows its wines in a maze garden. The Weingut Popphof vineyard estate has produced wine for over 500 years. These are just some of the Independent Winegrowers in the area.
