Culture, nature, outdoor leisure or wellness treatments. Whatever your preferences, Schenna/Scena has it all. This sun-kissed South Tyrolean family holiday destination stretches from the mountain plateau above Meran/Merano, to the panoramic summits of the Sarntal Alps. Enjoy
summer hiking and mountain biking at various altitudes or while the time away in one of the outdoor swimming pools. Thanks to the mild climate in the protected Meran basin, holidays in nature last longer in these parts. Even in late autumn, you can set off on leisurely hikes or mountain biking excursions below the tree line. Among the most popular outdoor
winter sports, are snow hiking and ski touring.
Mountain Trails and Excursions to the Summits
Schenna is surrounded by an expansive recreational landscape covered with numerous hiking trails. Hiking options range from easy family hikes and leisurely walks through blooming apple meadows, to more strenuous day-long treks up to the rustic mountain refuges, or organised tours to the summits. The ancient
Walwegge irrigation channel trails, and forest tracks leading up to the mountain refuges are especially popular. The most ambitious, seasoned mountaineers may attempt to scale the iconic peaks of the Sarntal Alps, such as the Hirzer or Ifinger, or set off on multi-day treks into the high mountains.
The Mountain Refuges
No matter where you go, you’ll likely come across one of the traditional alpine refuges or mountain huts. These congenial family-run rest-stops offer hikers a welcome opportunity to pause for a refreshment and take a needed break. If you care to linger a little longer, you can even lie down on one of the loungers on the sun terraces and sunbathe for a while, in a magnificent panoramic setting. At the very least, you’re guaranteed a hearty snack or sumptuous meal, a frothy draft beer, thirst-quenching fresh fruit juice, glass of local wine, or other refreshment of your choice.
Kneipp Therapy and Pools
The more health-conscious may also wish to join one of the guided
Kneipp hikes through the lush terrain, and the wooded area above Verdins near Schenna is also a popular forest-bathing destination. The scenic landscape in the valley offers all kinds of outdoor leisure activities, as well as relaxation in one of the outdoor swimming pools, such as the Lido Schenna, or hot springs including the renowned
Meran Thermal Baths, and the Natural Schwimming Pool at Gargazon/Gargazzone.
