Mountain Tour from Stulles to the Hochwart Mountain (2,608 m)

General description

A scenic mountain, with via ferrata chains

The last section of the climb is quite steep and tiring, but is manageable if cautiously negotiated. The last 10 vertical meters are almost vertical with rock steps carved out of the limestone and fixed via ferrata chains to assist climbers. Anyone who has made it this far is capable of reaching the top.

Starting point: Stulles/Stuls

Endpoint: Stulles/Stuls

Refreshment stop: Egger-Grub-Alm pasture, Hochalm shelter, Bockhütte

Route description

From the Stulles parking lot, head west along the tarred road past several farmsteads and then for about 1.5 km through the forest to Hochegg farm. At this point the road turns east ascending through forest and more bends. Shortly before reaching the expansive Stuller Mahder high plateau, turn left into a wide road that leads initially west through the forest before veering northeast through lush meadows to Egger-Grub-Alm pasture (14). From Egger-Grub-Alm climb keep going northeast across some relatively steep mountain meadows to reach Hochalm refuge (14, 26).

From the Hochalm shelter keep going northeast and cross the slope passing around a rocky overhang before arrive at a crossing after a short climb (26). Turn left (northwest) and climb the relatively narrow path with several tight bends as far as the ridge that extends to the top of the limestone rock. Using the rope to move forward while staying close to the rock, there are just few more meters to the wide Hochwart summit (26).

The way down from the Hochwart is in the opposite direction, leading to Hochalm pasture (26) or by following the tracks on the steep ridge back to the Hochalm.

From the hut descend to the Hochalm/Egger-Grub-Alm pasture (14, 26).

From there, take the road (14) back to Stulles/Stulfs to the village center or use the shortcuts to cut through the bends.

Safety instructions
The ascent to just below the summit is steep and strenuous, but not demanding if you are careful. The last 10 metres of ascent are almost vertical, but the step-like rocks of crystalline limestone and a taut wire rope offer very good hold, so that no one who has come this far actually has to give up the summit.
Equipment
Good hiking boots, hiking clothing and rain gear are recommended.
