In the dedicated
winter sports areas in the mountains, specially prepared
winter hiking trails lead through snowy alpine landscapes, whereas the mild Merano basin is free of snow throughout most of the winter. There are numerous
hiking trails in and around the town center accessible throughout winter, with pleasant temperatures providing a perfect setting for winter hiking in South Tyrol/Südtirol.
The
Waalwege trails, paths leading along the ancient irrigation channels, the
Tappeinerweg trail, and the
Sommerpromenade and
Winterpromenade walking paths through the center of the spa town of Merano/Meran are also perfect for leisurely walks below the picturesque alpine landscape.
In the five ski areas in the region, there are ideal snow hiking trails, with mountain inns along the way. Some of these have also received the Real Quality on the Mountains (Echte Qualität am Berg) award for their high quality local offerings.
