The simplest way to get to know a place better is by walking. Visitors to the villages and hamlets surrounding Lana and Merano will first of all take note of the beautiful variety nature has to offer in this region. Palm trees and magnolias thrive in front of the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, olive trees and oleander grow between birches and spruces. The charming historical town on the banks of the Passer river with its medieval alleyways and Mediterranean promenades is a paradise for lovers of historical ambience.
The 8 km-long
Skulpturenwanderweg trail is lined with contemporary sculptures by international artists and is the longest themed trail in Lana. Starting along the
Brandiswaalweg trail at the
Gaulschlucht gorge, the 8 km track follows the new
Ländpromenade trail up to the
Falschauer biotope. This natural habitat is home to fish, small animals and over 200 species of birds.
The
Kastanienerlebnisweg chestnut trail in Foiana/Völlan is of more general interest while the Aichbergweg trail is mostly historical in nature. The
Naturlehrpfad Falschauer themed trail focuses on flora and fauna in the valley. Along each trail, information panels explain the points of interest according to the theme.
Nordic walkers and hikers can enjoy a number of unique nature trails in and around Lana, which are designed as journeys for mind, body and spirit. There are four types of nature trails: Adventure trails, health oriented walks, art trails and spiritual trails.
Spiritual trails are for example the
Waalweg (path along the irrigation channels) in Lana, the path to St. Hippolyt in Naraun or to St. Jakob in Grissian.
The Chestnut Nature Trail through chestnut groves in Foiana and the "International hiking trail with felt art" in Tesimo are adventure and nature trails in one. On the path to the biotope on the delta of the river Valsura you can learn interesting facts about the local flora and fauna.
A new interpretation of the term "touring exhibition" is offered by the 8 km long Sculpture Walk Trail, which is lined with contemporary pieces of art and leads from the Brandiswaalweg via the Gola Canyon to the Valsura biotope.
Ländpromenade
In and around Lana there are a number of walking and hiking trails which have been greatly updated over the past few years.
For example the Falschauerpromenade at the Luis-Zuegg Park is now connected (barrier-free) with the quiet, recently renewed botanic Ländpark. This creates a continuous, miles long walk from the wild Gaul canyon over the "South Tyrolean Sculpture Walk Trail" (Südtiroler Skulpturenwanderweg) to the Falschauer biotope where hundreds of indigenous species of birds are at home.
