Earth pyramids are formed by landslides and stormy weather over the course of several thousand years. The conditions needed for them to form include a fine-grained subsoil, rain, a location protected from the wind and the presence of larger rocks or boulders. The rainwater cuts deep channels in the hillside. The rocks or boulders protect the material lying beneath. As a result, this material erodes considerably more slowly than the unprotected material around it. Over the course of a few thousand years, tall towers develop.
In Dorf Tirol these striking pillars can be found in the Mutbach Gorge near Tirol Castle and in the Finele valley near Kuens/Caines. The best way to see the earth pyramids in the Finele valley is on a hike from Dorf Tirol to Kuens. A ride on the Hochmuth cable car provides a magnificent view from above of the earth pyramids near Tirol Castle. Apart from this, these strange forms can also be seen from the Herrschaftsweg trail or on the path from Tirol Castle to the Farmerkreuz.
A scenic round trip with spectacular view points and the chance to stop and take a break.
