Merano High Mountain Trail
Varied hiking tour in the Texelgruppe Nature Park
Merano High Mountain Trail
The Merano High Mountain Trail is one of the most famous circular hiking routes in the Alps. This approximately 100-kilometer-long trail, marked as number 24, was designed by AVS mountain guides Robert Schönweger and Helmuth Ellmenreich and opened in 1985.
It traverses the Texel Group Nature Park, offering breathtaking views of the mountain landscape of the Merano region, the Vinschgau Valley, and, in clear weather, even the Dolomites and the Ortler Massif.
The southern section of the trail is characterized by Mediterranean vegetation, while the northern sections cross high-alpine landscapes.
Along the Merano High Mountain Trail, experienced and sure-footed hikers can explore these vistas over five to eight day stages. The route provides valuable insights into the lives of South Tyrolean mountain farmers who have shaped and maintained this impressive cultural landscape for centuries. Thanks to numerous ascent and descent options, the hike can be started or finished at various points accessible by cable car, public transport, car, or taxi. Some sections of the trail require surefootedness, a head for heights, and special caution. Chains, ropes, or safety railings are installed at exposed points for security.
Along the route, there are many dining and accommodation options known for their high quality. Typical South Tyrolean dishes also make the hike a culinary experience.

Best Times to Hike:

Merano High Mountain Trail South: May – October (possibly longer depending on snow conditions)
Merano High Mountain Trail North: Late June – September (depending on snow conditions)
Entire circular trail: July – late September.

Stage Recommendations:
The suggested sections of the trail can be combined as desired, and stages can also be hiked in reverse order. Each individual stage can be undertaken as an autonomous day hike.

Distillery Bauernbrennerei Lahnerhof – Where Tradition Meets Taste 🍐🍎

Nestled among the orchards lies the Lahnerhof – a place where passion, expertise, and heartfelt dedication come together to create fine brandies and grappas. 🌿🍎

Mathias Lamprecht runs the family-owned distillery in a listed farmhouse dating back to the 12th century. The Lahnerhof has been in the Lamprecht family for over 100 years. What was once the old washhouse has been lovingly transformed into a distillery – where today pure fruit brandies are crafted from the farm’s own apples, pears, plums, and Williams pears.👨‍🌾

Distillation takes place in a traditional copper still – a craft that demands precision, experience and intuition.🔥
The result: brandies that stand out for their purity, fruitiness and depth.🍎🍐

The Lahnerhof is a family-run farm that stands for small-scale distilling at its finest – regional, authentic and crafted with love for detail. 😀

Tastings and guided tours are available by appointment – an experience for all the senses!😉

The Marling Apple Crown 🍎👑🍂
On the third weekend in October (2025: 18–19 Oct), Merano becomes a stage for tradition, music and culinary delights at the Merano Grape Festival. 🎶🍷
Since 1886, the town has celebrated the harvest with folk music, regional specialties and a festive parade through the old town. 🏛️
Spot our icon: the Marling Apple Crown—the festival’s oldest float, in the parade since 1949, symbolizing Marling’s deep bond with apple growing. 🍎🌳
Handcrafted with love in the run-up to the parade – a cherished tradition, year after year. 😀
Don’t miss the grand procession—a colorful highlight of the golden autumn. 🍂🎊
After the festival, you can admire the Apple Crown on Marling’s church square. 😉

Have you been to the Merano Grape Festival before? Which parade float is your favorite? ☺️
