Lana’s many castles, fortresses, churches and convents bear witness to its deep historical and cultural roots, and a number of medieval relics still overlook the Val d’Adige/Etschtal Valley. Today, all that remains of the 11th Century Mayenburg Castle in Foiana/Völlan are its ruins. The castles of Braunsberg, Helmsdorf, Leonburg and Brandisburg still remain standing and all date back to the 13th Century.
Other 12th and 13th Century castles in Tesimo/Tisens and Prissiano/Prissian above Lana include Fahlburg Castle, Wehrburg Castle and Katzenzungen Castle. From April to October, Lebensberg Castle above Cermes/Tscherms is open daily for guided tours. The hiking route leading to the 13th Century Kröll Tower near Gargazzone/Gargazon is also worth visiting.
